Get Down and Play: Why Your Child’s Eye Level Matters
When you get down on the floor and play with your child, you are doing more than simply joining in the fun. You are entering their world. Getting down to your child’s eye level helps them feel seen, heard, and connected to you. Whether you are building a tower, looking at a book, pretending, or simply letting your child lead the play, your attention sends an important message: You matter to me. You do not need special toys, a lot of time, or a complicated activity. Even five minutes of floor time, with your phone set aside and your attention focused on your child, can create meaningful connection.
This month, try making time to get down and play every day. Let your child choose the game, follow their lead, and talk about what you are doing together. Read a book on the floor, build something, make up a silly song, or explore a park side by side. These simple moments support all five Basics Principles: building connection, talking and singing together, counting and comparing, exploring through movement and play, and reading and discussing stories. The goal is not perfect play – it is being present. When you get down to your child’s level, you make space for connection, conversation, learning, and a whole lot of fun.
