Your Voice Matters

From the moment a baby is born, their brain starts making more than 1 million neural connections every second. One of the most powerful things you can do to support their development? Talk to them.

We often hear “read to your baby” (and yes, please do!) but what really builds brains is all the talking, responding, and sharing that surrounds those stories.

Early literacy doesn’t mean reading books with words or sounding out letters. It starts with everyday moments like:

  • Describing what you’re doing as you change a diaper
  • Singing while you drive
  • Looking at a book and pointing to pictures

These interactions help babies learn what words mean, how conversations work, and that their voice matters too.

Here are 3 easy ways to build early literacy today:

  1. Talk during routines: “Now we’re putting on your socks! One sock, two socks.”
  2. Use real words even with babies: “That’s a banana. It’s yellow and soft.”
  3. Let your child respond: When they babble, pause and talk back like it’s a real conversation.

Every word you speak is a building block for your child’s learning and future. You don’t need fancy toys or flashcards, you are the most powerful teacher they’ll ever have.
